You said yes! Now the moment you dreamed about all your life is becoming a reality and you have a thousand ideas swirling around in your head—the dress, your bridesmaids, the maid of honor, flowers, bouquet, the reception, where you will go for your honeymoon. It’s overwhelming! But let’s stop for a moment and take a breath before you start planning one of the most important days of your life. Consider why you are here and what this moment means to you. What is the wedding celebration really about?
It’s about love, your love for each other, your love for your family and friends. It’s about tradition, ritual, ceremony, and celebration. It is about how you want to share the joy and love of this experience with them.
This is the perfect time to sit back and reflect on how you will have your guests share in this experience with you and the love of your life as you make your public declaration of love and commitment. Before you make the very first plans, think about how to make this about love and what personal touches you can add to your wedding that will make the guests experience more personal and enjoyable. Marriage is a journey, but the wedding is a destination (figuratively and sometimes literally, but we will cover that in later posts) and a celebration as well as the introduction to the journey of a lifetime. And what better way then to start the journey off by instilling the wedding experience with love.
Let us begin by thinking about what is important about this day to you. Is tradition and ceremony important? Are you hoping to get married in your family church or synagogue? Or, are you looking outside the box at a certain venue, maybe a beautiful place or outdoor setting that is special to you and your fiancé? Think about incorporating what you both like to do for fun: are you active and adventurous; do you love great music and going to concerts; or do you all love just hanging out at home and cooking with your friends?
What is your style: vintage; eclectic; or modern? Do you love great food, big beautiful floral, maybe you have been collecting boards on Pinterest? Make a list of ideas of all the things your friends and family will know when they see and experience it at the wedding that it is definitely your personality as a couple. The key is to write all of this down and list everything important to you right now because it will help you create your vision—the vision (let’s face it) you’ve been dreaming about since you were five.
Some people have been thinking about and planning this day all of their life, others may have never even given it any thought until now and that is ok!
Either way, if you approach the whole process with LOVE and an open mind it will help you come up with a clear plan that will lead to well-defined ideas and tasks, and you will have no problem planning the wedding of your dreams.
Your wedding celebration is about you, your future spouse and your life together. It will be one of the most special days of your life. Let it reflect who you are and what you cherish.
“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”
